Public Health Scotland (PHS) has published this week’s surveillance reports which present the latest data on respiratory infections across Scotland.

The weekly national respiratory infection and COVID-19 statistical reports detail that influenza incidence remains high, particularly in those aged 75+. The numbers of hospitalised patients who tested positive for influenza reported in each of the last two weeks of December were higher than those reported for any week since the start of the 2016/2017 season. The data also show that there has been a slight increase from the previous week in the number of patients in hospital with COVID-19.

The latest Group A strep (GAS) surveillance data show that the recent increases in cases of GAS may be declining and the more serious Invasive GAS (IGAS) infections remain stable and similar to previous years.

It is important to note that the latest surveillance data may not be complete and is subject to change. This is due to possible delays in laboratory reports being notified to PHS over the festive period.

PHS continues to encourage good hand and respiratory hygiene to help stop the spread of bugs. By keeping our hands clean and helping to ensure children practice good hand hygiene, we can help reduce the spread of many common infections this winter.
