About this release

This release by Public Health Scotland (PHS) presents a summary analysis of all samples submitted for the respiratory surveillance for the 2021 to 2022 season.

Further information

The Community Acute Respiratory Infection (CARI) surveillance programme was established in Scotland in November 2021, replacing the multicomponent programme that was in place for enhanced surveillance of COVID-19. CARI is an integrated sentinel community (primary care) surveillance programme for SARS-CoV-2, influenza and other respiratory infections caused by RSV, adenovirus, coronavirus (non SARS CoV-2), human metapneumovirus, rhinovirus, parainfluenza and mycoplasma pneumoniae.

Data derived from CARI samples produced a continuous stream of surveillance data that was routinely shared with clinicians and policy-makers during the 2021/2022 season.

This report presents a summary analysis of all 3,905 samples submitted for respiratory surveillance, including trends in swab positivity, levels of circulating pathogens and symptoms analysis.
