About this release

This release by Public Health Scotland (PHS) of quarterly official statistics in development presents provisional data from the national enhanced surveillance system for tuberculosis (TB) notifications in Scotland. This release present provisional quarterly data up to quarter 2 (April to June) of 2026, in addition to the annual TB surveillance report which is published by PHS.

The TB quarterly report is now based on data extracted from the newly adopted UK National Tuberculosis Surveillance System (NTBS) and therefore there are minor changes in historical data. Previously, Scottish TB surveillance data was captured by the Enhanced Surveillance of Mycobacterial Infections (ESMI) system. NTBS is a dynamic data source and statistics released are provisional and subject to validation and future planned revisions. These revisions do not affect the overall interpretation or conclusions to be drawn from the previously published data.

Main points

Provisional data for quarters 1 and 2, 2026:

There were 125 TB notifications.
TB notifications decreased by 21.9% when compared with quarters 1–2 2025 when there were 160 TB notifications.
The percentage of TB notifications that were male was 65.6% compared with 59.4% in quarters 1–2 2025.
TB notifications were received from 10 health boards compared to quarters 1–2 2025 when TB notifications were received from nine health boards.
Most TB notifications received were from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (56/125; 44.8%) and NHS Lothian (26/125; 20.8%).
The percentage of TB notifications presenting with pulmonary disease was 47.2% compared with 62.5% in quarters 1–2 2025.

Overall numbers

There were 125 TB notifications in quarters 1–2 of 2026, which is a decrease of 21.9% when compared with quarters 1–2 of 2025 when there were 160 notifications. Table 1 shows the number of TB notifications per quarter.

Figure 1 illustrates the number of TB notifications per quarter for Scotland (from quarter 1 2020 to quarter 2 2026). The cumulative number of notifications by month can be seen in Figure 2.

Figure 1 is a bar chart showing the number of tuberculosis (TB) notifications in Scotland per quarter from quarter 1 2020 to quarter 2 2026. Each bar represents the number of notifications for that quarter. The chart shows that TB notifications fluctuate per quarter, starting with 58 notifications in Q1 2020 and reaching a peak of 86 in quarter 2, 2025. The lowest number was 43 notifications in Q1 2021. There were 61 notifications in Q2 2026 compared to 86 notifications in Q2 2025, a decrease of 29.1%. — Image caption **Figure 1. Figure 2 is a line chart showing the cumulative number of quarterly tuberculosis (TB) notifications in Scotland from January 2020 to June 2026. Each line represents the cumulative number of TB notifications for that year. The cumulative TB notifications were highest in the period January to December 2025 and lowest in 2022. TB notifications by sex

The percentage of TB notifications in quarters 1–2 2026 that were male was 65.6% (82/125) compared with 59.4% (95/160) in quarters 1–2 2025.

Geographical distribution

Figure 3 shows the TB notifications in Scotland each quarter by health board. In quarters 1–2 2026:

TB notifications were received from 10 health boards compared to 9 health boards in quarters 1–2 2025.

Most TB notifications received were from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (56/125; 44.8%) and NHS Lothian (26/125; 20.8%).

TB notifications decreased in seven health boards and increased in two health boards (NHS Ayrshire & Arran and NHS Dumfries & Galloway) when compared with quarters 1–2 2025. There was no change in the number of TB notifications from NHS Forth Valley (4 cases in quarters 1–2 of both 2025 and 2026).

There were no TB notifications from NHS Borders, NHS Orkney, NHS Shetland or NHS Western Isles.

Figure 3 is a stacked bar chart showing the tuberculosis (TB) notifications in Scotland each quarter by health board from quarter 1 2020 to quarter 2 2026. The chart shows that the highest number of TB notifications reported each quarter were from NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde and NHS Lothian. For Q2 2026, no notifications were received for six NHS boards: NHS Borders, NHS Dumfries and Galloway, NHS Highland, NHS Orkney, NHS Shetland or NHS Western Isles. — Image caption **Figure 3. Site of TB disease

Figure 4 shows the proportion of TB notifications in Scotland with pulmonary and non-pulmonary disease by quarter. In quarters 1–2 2026, 47.2% (59/125) of TB notifications presented with pulmonary disease compared with 62.5% (100/160) in quarters 1–2 2025.

Figure 4 is a horizontal bar chart showing the proportion of tuberculosis (TB) notifications in Scotland by quarter and site of disease from quarter 1 2020 to quarter 2 2026. The site of disease was classified as pulmonary or non-pulmonary. The chart shows the proportion of pulmonary TB notifications varied each quarter, highest in Q1 2025 at 70.3% and lowest in the most recent quarter at 39.3%. Country of birth and site of TB disease

Figure 5 shows the number of TB notifications by country of birth (UK born or non-UK born), where this was known, by quarter. The proportion of TB notifications amongst people born outside the UK was 75.2% (94/125) in quarters 1–2 2026, compared to 78.0 % (124/159) in quarters 1–2 2025.

Figure 5 is a stacked bar chart showing tuberculosis (TB) notifications in Scotland by country of birth by quarter, from quarter 1 2020 to quarter 2 2026. The country of birth was classified as UK born or non-UK born. The chart shows that the number of TB notifications from UK born and non-UK born varied each quarter. The number of TB notifications for UK born and non-UK born in Q2 2026 were 14/61 and 47/61, respectively. In Q2 2025, the number of TB notifications for UK born and non-UK born were 19/86 and 67/86, respectively. This represented a 26.3% decrease in cases born outside the UK in Q2 2026 when compared to that in Q2 2025. — Image caption **Figure 5.
